Background of the study
Climate change has become a pervasive global challenge affecting urban and rural communities alike, with significant attention focused on developing nations (Adebayo, 2023). In Ibadan North, residents face direct and indirect impacts of climate variability, yet their level of awareness and response measures remain underexplored. Rapid urbanization, industrial activities, and environmental degradation have compounded the effects of climate change, prompting researchers to assess community responses to these emerging challenges (Olufemi, 2024). Prior studies have shown that an informed public can drive effective local adaptation strategies (Ibrahim, 2025). However, existing literature indicates that a knowledge gap persists among urban residents regarding mitigation practices, risk reduction, and adaptive strategies. The study will explore how residents’ perceptions influence their behavior towards climate resilience initiatives and whether socio-economic factors affect their level of awareness. Moreover, this research will examine the interplay between governmental policies and community responses in the context of rapid environmental change. Emerging evidence suggests that integrated communication channels and educational campaigns can empower communities to respond better to climatic adversities (Adebayo, 2023). This background sets the stage for a critical analysis of public engagement in climate action in a rapidly evolving urban context.

Statement of the problem
Despite increasing climate change impacts in urban centers, there remains a significant gap in understanding the level of awareness and preparedness among residents in Ibadan North. The insufficient dissemination of climate-related information and the lack of community-driven adaptation strategies have led to vulnerabilities in the population. This research seeks to identify the factors contributing to this awareness gap and examine the extent to which residents actively engage in mitigating climate impacts. The inadequacy of current public policies and educational interventions further exacerbates the risk, necessitating a focused inquiry into community responses (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the current level of climate change awareness among residents.

  2. To assess the response strategies adopted by the community.

  3. To analyze the role of socio-economic factors in shaping residents’ responses.

Research questions:

  1. What is the current level of climate change awareness among residents in Ibadan North?

  2. How do socio-economic factors influence community response strategies?

  3. What is the effectiveness of existing policies in enhancing community resilience?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is a significant relationship between residents’ socio-economic status and their climate change awareness.

  2. Community response strategies are directly influenced by the level of governmental policy implementation.

  3. Increased awareness leads to improved adaptation measures among residents.

Significance of the study
This study provides critical insights into the nexus between climate change awareness and community response. Its findings will inform local policymakers, environmental practitioners, and community leaders, facilitating the development of targeted educational campaigns and adaptive strategies. Ultimately, the research aims to enhance community resilience and guide sustainable urban planning in the face of climatic challenges (Olufemi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the evaluation of residents’ awareness and response strategies concerning climate change within Ibadan North Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  • Climate Change: Long-term alteration in temperature and typical weather patterns.

  • Awareness: The state of being informed about environmental issues.

  • Resilience: The capacity to recover quickly from environmental shocks.
